Registration
To schedule an appointment with one of our four surgeons, a referral from your family doctor is required. This referral can be submitted either in paper or electronic form. Once the referral is submitted, the receptionist will contact you to schedule an appointment.
To ensure the highest level of service, it is important that healthcare professionals conduct tests and/or imaging studies prior to the patient's medical interview. Unless otherwise stated, referrals are typically valid for one year from the date of issuance.

Information for patients before the procedure

Under local anesthesia
Before surgery
- One week before your procedure, in consultation with your treating physician, you should stop taking blood-thinning medications unless your surgeon advises otherwise.
- Other medications can be taken normally, including on the day of the procedure.
- For hand surgery, rings should be removed from the hand to be operated on two days before the procedure. On the morning of surgery, nail polish and all jewelry should be removed and showered.
- Do not use body oils or creams and do not wear perfume.
- It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing that is easy to put on and take off.
- Fasting is not necessary.
- Before the procedure, please have your phone with you, as it may happen that the patient receives a call informing him that the procedure will take place earlier or later than planned.
- Upon arrival at the Orkuhúsið treatment wing, the patient will meet with a surgeon who will administer an anesthetic.
- While waiting for surgery, you can browse your phone or listen to music if you bring small headphones. Phone calls and taking photos are not permitted in the treatment wing.
After surgery
- After hand surgery, the patient leaves the operating table and goes directly home. After foot surgery, the patient recovers in the recovery room at Orkuhúsið before returning home.
- It is recommended that you do not drive on the day of your surgery.
- For the first few days after surgery, it is a good idea to keep your limb elevated as much as possible to reduce inflammation.
- For the first few days or weeks, you may experience discomfort at the procedure site. Painkillers like Panodil and anti-inflammatories like Ibufen are usually sufficient. These medications are available over the counter. In other cases, your surgeon will prescribe stronger medications.
- You can shower, but you should protect the bandages with a plastic bag. After minor hand surgery, the wound can be gently rinsed with clean running water on the third day after surgery.
- If you experience unexpected problems with your hand, such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or a high body temperature, contact your surgeon.
